A meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov may take place in Budapest on October 30.

The Financial Times writes about this.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is planning to present his own initiative, which could be a prerequisite for broader talks involving Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, a German official said. The idea is likely to be to create a platform to discuss the situation in Ukraine without the participation of Ukraine itself or the EU.

It was previously reported that the meeting between Lavrov and Rubio scheduled for October 23 was canceled. The reason was deep disagreements in the parties’ positions on ending the war in Ukraine, as well as the lack of concessions from the Kremlin.

At the same time, the Russian Foreign Ministry does not hide the fact that they are actively preparing for a possible meeting between Putin and Trump. The Russian side calls it “deep and serious diplomatic work.”

However, the prospect of such talks is causing concern in the European Union. There have been comments in the media that holding peace talks between the US and Russia without the involvement of the EU or official Kyiv puts European leaders in an extremely awkward position.

The position of official Warsaw was voiced by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He opposed the idea of holding talks between Zelensky and Putin in Budapest, emphasizing the unacceptability of such a format for the countries of Central Europe.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also expressed concern and conveyed to the American side that Hungary is not an acceptable venue for future peace talks.

As reported, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio may hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov this week.

As a reminder, CNN previously reported, citing sources in the White House, that the expected talks between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, which were scheduled to take place this week, have been postponed indefinitely.
