Lawyer Golovan: the only civilized way out is to lift sanctions against Poroshenko

The only civilized way out of the situation surrounding the Supreme Court’s consideration of the case on sanctions against Petro Poroshenko is to cancel them.

This was stated by the lawyer of the fifth President of Ukraine, Ihor Golovan.

According to him, the illegality of the sanctions is confirmed by numerous legal arguments, as well as assessments by Ukraine’s international partners.

“We understand, and the world understands. And already in the European Union they are not hinting, but directly writing about ‘personal illegal sanctions’,” said Golovan, recalling the relevant resolution of the European People’s Party.

The lawyer emphasized that the only legal way to resolve the situation is to lift the sanctions.

“A set of legal arguments that confirms the illegality of sanctions, and the only way out of this is their abolition – the only civilized way out,” he noted.

Golovan also stated that the application of sanctions and the lengthy consideration of the case in court, in his opinion, contradict the principles of the rule of law and legal certainty.

“If we think we will get to Europe, where the rule of law is a key principle, then this decision to impose sanctions and the months-long process of appealing their illegality are evidence of the ineffectiveness of justice,” the lawyer said.

Earlier, the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee adopted a report in which it strongly condemned the introduction of personal sanctions against opposition leaders and representatives of civil society.
