Le Pen threatened to cut off funding for Ukraine if she wins the election

Марін Ле Пен

The leader of the French far-right National Rally party, Marine Le Pen, announced her intention to reduce financial assistance to Ukraine if she wins the 2027 presidential election. She also opposed Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

This was reported by the Financial Times following an interview with the politician.

Le Pen has said that if elected president of France, she is ready for a serious confrontation with the European Union. In particular, she wants to cut the EU budget and limit the powers of European institutions.

The politician also questioned France’s continued participation in financing aid to Ukraine through the European Union.

This includes, in particular, the EU’s €90 billion loan program for Ukraine’s defense and budgetary needs. €45 billion is planned for 2027.

According to Le Pen, France’s share in this program is about 18 billion euros. She considers such commitments excessive.

“France can no longer afford this,” the politician said, explaining her position on further support for Ukraine.

Le Pen also promised to end bilateral financial assistance to Kyiv, leaving the possibility of separate operational support and training of the Ukrainian military.

At the same time, she opposes the European Commission’s proposed financing mechanism for Ukraine of up to 100 billion euros within the next seven-year EU budget.

To counteract the budget agreement, the politician allows blocking half of France’s contribution to the European Union budget.

Le Pen against Ukraine’s accession to the EU

Separately, the leader of the “National Union” confirmed her disagreement with Ukraine’s European integration.

She called Ukraine’s possible accession to the EU “hara-kiri,” claiming that it would allegedly lead to a loss of sovereignty and significant economic losses for France.

At the same time, Le Pen refrained from directly identifying Russia as the main threat to European security.

“I can’t look into Mr. Putin’s head and I don’t know Mr. Putin’s plans,” the politician said.

As previously reported, MEP Raphael Glucksmann won the French center-left primaries and became their candidate for the 2027 presidential election. He won 66% of the vote in the first round. Unlike Marine Le Pen, Glucksmann consistently supports Ukraine and considers its protection important for the security of all of Europe.

We also wrote that the leader of the French “National Union” Jordan Bardelha proposed changing the conditions for providing European aid to Ukraine . In particular, he advocated using funding for the purchase of European defense industry products.
