Ukrainian military personnel may be present in western Libya by agreement with local authorities. According to journalists, this presence is related to possible operations against the Russian fleet in the Mediterranean Sea.
This is reported by RFI .
According to journalists, there may be more than 200 Ukrainian officers and military experts in Libya. They are stationed by agreement with the government in Tripoli, headed by Abdelhamid Dbeiba.
As noted, the Ukrainian military is based in several locations in the west of the country:
- the Air Force Academy in Misrata;
- a base for launching air and sea drones in the city of Zawiya;
- Headquarters of the 111th Brigade of the Libyan Army near Tripoli.
Journalists report that one of the bases has access to the sea and is used to launch naval drones. It was from this location, according to sources, that attacks on Russian ships in the Mediterranean could be carried out.
In particular, this concerns the incident on March 4, 2026, when the Russian gas tanker Arctic Metagas was hit. According to sources, the strike could have been carried out by a Ukrainian-made naval drone.
Journalists also recall another incident from December 19, 2025, when a Russian oil tanker was attacked in neutral waters near Libya.
According to sources, the agreements between Ukraine and the Tripoli authorities provide for military cooperation, including training of the Libyan military and possible future supplies of weapons.
At the same time, official Ukrainian authorities did not comment on this data, and the Libyan authorities did not publicly confirm information about the deployment of Ukrainian forces on their territory.
