Former South Korean President Yun Seok-yeol has been sentenced to life in prison for attempting to impose martial law in the country in 2024.

This was reported by Yonhap.

Despite the fact that the prosecutor demanded the death penalty for the former employee, the court handed down a sentence that was “milder” than requested.

As Reuters notes , the judge said that Yoon Seok-yeol conspired with then-Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun to undermine the constitutional order by deploying troops near parliament and paralyzing its work.

“The court ruled that sending armed troops to parliament… and using equipment to attempt arrests are all acts of rebellion,” the judge stressed.

In addition, the court also sentenced the former head of the Ministry of Defense, leaving him in custody for 30 years.

The former minister’s lawyers assured that their client intends to appeal.

It was previously reported that former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law in the country.

Subsequently, South Korean Army General Park An-soo was appointed “martial law commander” and issued a decree banning all political activity and “political propaganda.”
