On Wednesday, October 7, legendary footballer Lionel Messi played his farewell match for the Argentina national team.
FIFA reported this.
The 39-year-old striker’s farewell match was a friendly against Benin in Buenos Aires. Argentina won 3-0.
Messi scored a goal in the 71st minute, converting a penalty, and also provided two assists. Nicolas Otamendi and Alexis MacAllister also scored a goal each.
“It’s been an incredible pleasure to wear this shirt for over 20 years. Not being able to come back here is incredibly painful. But I swear I want to keep doing this, because Argentina is the best thing that can happen to you,” Messi said after the match.
Messi has played 208 matches for the Argentina national team, scoring 126 goals and providing 70 assists. He won the 2022 World Cup and two Copa América titles with the national team, in 2021 and 2024.
Messi also won a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics as part of the Argentina Olympic team.
At club level, the footballer continues his career with American club Inter Miami. He previously played for Spanish club Barcelona and French club PSG. Messi is an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
