In the occupied territories, the brutal oppression of Ukrainians continues – not only is access to their native language restricted, but a real genocide is underway. At the same time, the Russian Federation has withdrawn from the treaty on combating torture, thus legalizing its actions against Ukrainians, calling it “denazification.”

This was announced on the air of “Pryamoy” by Taras Kremin, Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language in 2020-2025.

“Information about the fight against citizens of Ukraine who are temporarily occupied became known on the eve of the new school year. I want to emphasize that children are limited in access not only to the Ukrainian language, but also genocide has been ongoing in the temporarily occupied territory since 2014. Numerous reports and documentation of such facts of linguocide in the temporarily occupied territory have been presented by me repeatedly and have indeed become the subject of many criminal cases,” Kremin noted.

At the same time, he emphasized that any use of the Ukrainian language will be persecuted in the occupied territories, in particular, “the use of forms common on their territory.”

“Around these same days, we learned that the aggressor country withdrew from the treaty on the fight against torture and combating crimes against humanity. This means that they decided to legalize everything that is called the fight against Ukrainians and Ukrainianness. And this will be presented to the domestic consumer on the territory of the aggressor country as a real fight against denazification,” the former ombudsman explains.

Therefore, the current authorities, according to him, need to more actively counteract such crimes and strengthen information policy in the state.

“Such actions should definitely be considered by the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. On the one hand, we must properly counteract such crimes and report them to international human rights organizations, assist law enforcement agencies not only in exposing such facts, but also in bringing specific individuals to criminal responsibility. This, of course, means declaring appropriate suspicions against those who were involved in this,” Kremin is convinced.

“And, of course, this is the information component, which definitely needs to be strengthened. For example, I don’t understand why certain social networks have not been banned yet, why information hackers and real outspoken enemies of the Ukrainian people feel so at ease on the territory of Ukraine. I’m talking about those resources that operate in unlimited quantities, and they spread openly anti-Ukrainian propaganda, and it harms our national interests… I would like to hear real actions from the government and relevant ministries, because on the eve of September 1, there must be clear confidence that we are not only recording, but also counteracting and punishing criminals,” Taras Kremin summed up.

The day before, the Center for National Resistance reported that the so-called authorities in the temporarily occupied territories had informed parents of schoolchildren about the ban on their children using the Ukrainian language and the possible blacklisting of disloyal children if they were caught using their native language. The warning was made in the context of possible criminal penalties for so-called extremism.

The Central Intelligence Agency also reported that a new wave of repressions is unfolding in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine against those who remain loyal to Ukrainian citizenship. Russian special services are conducting filtration raids throughout the occupation zone – from the Sea of Azov to the north of Luhansk region. The main goal is to force the mass acceptance of Russian passports and create an image of “popular support” for the occupation regime.
