Vilnius Airport has temporarily suspended operations due to hot air balloon flights near the airport, the fourth time in a week that Lithuanian airspace has been closed due to such incidents.

This was reported by the press service of Vilnius Airport.

Aircraft movements at Vilnius International Airport were halted on October 26 at 21:42 local time. Hot air balloons were moving towards the airport, posing a threat to flight safety. The restrictions affected both arriving and departing flights.

A total of 47 flights were affected: 13 were canceled, 14 were redirected to other airports, and another 20 were delayed in Vilnius. Some of the planes were sent to Kaunas and Riga.

The restrictions were originally scheduled to last until 03:40 on Monday, October 27, but were later extended until 05:40.

“Passengers whose flights have been canceled are advised not to go to the airport and to contact the airlines directly for alternative travel options and additional information,” the airport said in a statement.

Earlier, in Palma de Mallorca (Spain) , the airport was temporarily closed on October 19 due to the appearance of an unidentified drone in the area of Son Sant Joan airport. The incident caused delays and flight changes.

By the way, one of the largest manufacturers of air defense systems in Europe reported an increase in the number of unknown drones over its secret facilities.

Recall that in Norway, an unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle was recorded flying over one of the strategic facilities – the Equinor gas field located in the North Sea.

As reported, flights of unidentified drones were recorded in Denmark, Sweden, Lithuania, Norway and Finland , some of which flew near military facilities and strategic infrastructure.
