Lithuanian and Russian energy companies are negotiating an extension of the gas transit agreement to Kaliningrad, which expires in December 2025.
LRT reports this.
According to the publication, Lithuanian operator Amber Grid and Russia’s Gazprom may agree on a shorter term for the new contract and higher service fees.
The European Commission has been informed of the negotiations, as the decision to extend transit must be made with the participation of EU institutions, and not only bilaterally.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda stated that he sees no obstacles to extending the contract if it is beneficial to Vilnius and complies with European standards.
Lithuania earns up to 20 million euros annually from transit, while, according to LRT, the average income is around 12 million euros.
Lithuania completely stopped importing Russian gas in April 2022, leaving only transit to the Kaliningrad region through its territory.
Earlier, the Lithuanian government decided to close the border with Belarus from October 30 to November 30, with the possibility of extension.
