The Lithuanian government has declared a state of emergency throughout the country due to the widespread use of balloons for smuggling from Belarus.

This is reported by LRT.lt, citing official sources.

Coordination of measures during the state of emergency has been entrusted to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Vladyslav Kondratovych.

According to the Lithuanian Ministry of Internal Affairs, the launch of balloons from a neighboring country threatens national security and is used to move smuggled goods.

At the same time, the agency assures that the introduction of a state of emergency will not cause significant inconvenience to the population. The measures will be targeted and proportionate, aimed only at violators and organizers of illegal activities.

As a reminder, on November 2, Lithuania announced that the last day was the “most intense” in November due to the launch of balloons carrying contraband from the territory of Belarus.

As reported, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU may impose new economic restrictions against Belarus.

In addition, the presidents of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia agreed that any decision to dismantle the railway connection with Russia and Belarus would be made jointly.
