The Lithuanian government has extended temporary protection for people who left Ukraine due to the war until March 4, 2028. At the same time, a new condition has been introduced for some men liable for military service.

This is reported by the Lithuanian broadcaster LRT.

According to the government’s decision, temporary residence permits based on temporary protection will be issued or extended until March 4, 2028. Previously, they were valid until March 4, 2027.

A separate requirement has been introduced for persons subject to military service in Ukraine. When applying for temporary protection, they will be required to provide confirmation of their military service.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Internal Affairs explained that such confirmation may be a document confirming the legal crossing of the Ukrainian border during departure, a corresponding mark in the passport, or an official document confirming exemption from military service or its fulfillment.

At the same time, the new rule will not apply to people who were granted temporary protection in any EU country before August 4, 2026 and who continuously maintain this status.

An exception was also provided for those who had applied for temporary protection in Lithuania before August 4, but a decision on it had not yet been made at that time.

According to the Lithuanian Migration Board, as of September 6, 52,052 people had valid residence permits based on temporary protection. The department receives approximately 30–40 new applications every day.

Recall that earlier the European Union extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028. At the same time, a requirement was introduced for some new applicants to confirm their military service.
