Lithuania plans to launch its own assembly and maintenance of the latest version of the Leopard 2 A8 battle tanks.
This was reported by the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defense.
The country’s Ministry of Defense has signed a memorandum of industrial cooperation with KNDS Deutschland, Rheinmetall Landsysteme and international partners of the state-owned energy group EPSO-G. The document provides for the assembly of some tanks directly in Lithuania to reduce delivery times and develop the national military-industrial complex.
The LDS Maintenance Center will begin construction of a factory to produce Leopard 2 A8s. Lithuania has also signed a separate agreement for the continuous repair and maintenance of tanks and other armored vehicles for its armed forces.
In the future, the company plans to service the German brigade stationed in Lithuania, as well as work with armored vehicles from other countries.
LDS Board of Directors Chairman Markus Schmidt announced that the first tank assembled in Lithuania is planned to be released in early 2028, and the entire batch is planned to be completed by the end of 2030.
The factory infrastructure will be built in the Kaunas free economic zone. Investments in the project will amount to about 50 million euros.
As previously reported, Lithuania warned that Ukraine could find itself in a financial trap as early as 2026 due to EU delays in approving a reparations loan.
