Lithuania plans to strengthen the protection of its airspace after it was violated for the second time in a month by an unmanned aerial vehicle, likely flying in from Belarus.
This was reported by the LRT publication.
Additional air defense forces will appear near the Belarusian border.
“We will take additional measures to ensure more effective surveillance abroad, cooperating with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and additional army forces will be involved for this,” assured Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Šakalenė.
In turn, the Commander-in-Chief of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Raimundas Vaikšnoras, noted that it is already known where drones can pass, so air defense will be strengthened in those areas.
Also, according to him, cooperation with the State Border Guard Service will be deepened.
“Without their eyes in the sky and on the ground, without what they see and hear, it’s difficult for us to identify anything,” he explained.
In addition, Vaikshnoras stressed the need to accelerate procurement related to UAV detection. In particular, it concerns short-range radars, which were planned to be purchased later.
At the same time, it is noted that an acoustic drone detection system will be implemented on the border with Belarus.
“What is really realistic is Sky Fortress. This is a system of microphones that recognize objects by acoustic signals – they are going to implement it throughout the border area,” the Lithuanian commander-in-chief noted.
Let us recall that on Monday, July 28 , an unknown unmanned aerial vehicle flew into the territory of Lithuania from Belarus .
By the way, on July 10, Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Šakalenė stated that a Gerbera UAV had flown into the country from Belarus .
