Lithuania will deploy troops to the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region in the coming weeks to strengthen security.

This was announced by Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas.

He said he had authorized the deployment of military personnel at the request of the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs to assist border guards.

The decision was made, in particular, amid reports of illegal migrants attempting to cross the border. Earlier, the Lithuanian Armed Forces reported that at least 20 illegal migrants, accompanied by a group of masked individuals, attempted to cross the border.

“The increased security is being implemented as a preventative measure, given the signs of a possible sharp increase in the flow of aggressive foreigners due to potential mobilization in the Russian Federation. We are maintaining—and must maintain—the peace, but remain vigilant,” Kaunas noted.

The minister added that up to 100 Lithuanian military personnel are planned to be deployed to guard the border by October 16.

Russia recently threatened to use nuclear weapons if NATO attempted to isolate the Kaliningrad region .
