The Lithuanian Seimas has supported an amendment to the constitution in its first vote, lifting the ban on weapons of mass destruction in the country. 106 deputies voted in favor of the changes.
This is reported by the Lithuanian broadcaster LRT.
18 parliamentarians opposed the amendment, and six more abstained.
The changes concern Article 137 of the Constitution of Lithuania. It currently prohibits the placement of weapons of mass destruction and military bases of foreign countries on the territory of the state.
However, today’s vote does not yet mean the final abolition of this provision. To amend the Constitution, the Sejm must hold another vote no earlier than in three months.
During it, the changes must be supported by at least 94 out of 141 deputies . Parliament Speaker Juozas Olekas previously stated that the final vote is planned to be held on January 12, 2027 .
Lithuanian Minister of National Defense Robertas Kaunas linked the need for changes to the security situation in the region. According to him, strategic weapons of Russia and Belarus are located near Lithuania, in particular in the Kaliningrad region.
At the same time, lifting the constitutional ban would not in itself mean that nuclear weapons would automatically be stationed in Lithuania. It would only remove the legal restriction that currently precludes such a scenario.
As a reminder, on September 22, the Lithuanian Seimas already supported a proposal to remove the ban on the deployment of weapons of mass destruction from the Constitution . At that time, it was determined that the first vote on the amendment itself would take place on October 6.
In addition, Russia recently threatened to use nuclear weapons if NATO attempted to isolate the Kaliningrad region .
