Berlin Local Elections Underway: First Voting Data Released

In Berlin, the Left Party (Die Linke) leads the local elections with 24.5% of the vote, according to preliminary data. The Christian Democratic Union is in second place with 20%, followed by the AfD, the Greens, and the SPD.

According to preliminary estimates, the AfD receives 16% of the vote, the Greens 15%, and the SPD 12%.

The Left Party leader Elif Eralp campaigned on the housing crisis and rent cuts, and the party’s proposals include expropriating apartments owned by large corporate landlords.

To form a government, the Left may need coalition agreements with other parties. Possible partners include the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Greens.

On September 20, elections were also held in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to initial forecasts, the AfD is leading there with 37% of the vote, while the SPD is receiving 35.5%.

As a reminder, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which opposes support for Ukraine and favors rapprochement with Russia, won the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt. However, the party fell a few seats short of an independent majority in the local parliament.
