Local elections have begun in Berlin: first voting data

In Berlin, the local elections are led by the Left Party (Die Linke), which has received 24.5% of the vote, according to preliminary data. The Christian Democratic Union is in second place with 20%, followed by the AfD, the Greens and the SPD.

According to preliminary estimates, the AfD receives 16% of the vote, the Greens – 15%, and the SPD – 12%.

The Left Party leader Elif Eralp campaigned on the housing crisis and rent cuts, with the party’s proposals including the expropriation of apartments owned by large corporate landlords.

To form a government, the Left may need coalition agreements with other parties. Possible partners include the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Greens.

On September 20, elections were also held in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to initial forecasts, the AfD is leading there with 37% of the vote, while the SPD is receiving 35.5%.

As a reminder, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which opposes support for Ukraine and favors rapprochement with Russia, won the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt. However, the party fell a few seats short of an independent majority in the local parliament.
