Kyiv and Odesa could face the most difficult power supply situation during the heating season due to possible Russian strikes on energy infrastructure. In the worst-case scenario, the capital will have only four hours of electricity per day, and in frosts as low as −10 °C, outages could last up to eight hours per day.

This is reported by Business Censor , citing an interlocutor familiar with the content of the relevant plans.

Director of the Energy Research Center , Oleksandr Kharchenko, considers this scenario to be the most pessimistic for Kyiv, but sees no reason to predict a similar situation for the entire country.

“This is the most pessimistic scenario for Kyiv. But I see no reason to believe that it can spread to the entire country,” the expert noted in a comment to the publication.

According to his assessment, the biggest problems with electricity supply may arise in Kyiv and the Odessa region. These regions are vulnerable due to a general shortage of electricity and the risk of targeted Russian attacks on energy facilities.

“Kyiv and Odessa may suffer more than other cities due to the general energy deficit and in the event of focused attacks on energy facilities ,” Kharchenko emphasized .

Kyiv CHP-5, CHP-6 and Darnytsia CHP do not produce enough electricity to cover the needs of the capital. During the heating season , these facilities will operate mainly to provide heat supply.

The main source of electricity for Kyiv is the Rivne and Khmelnytsky nuclear power plants. However, if the substations through which electricity is supplied to the capital are damaged , it will be difficult to compensate for the deficit.

Other experts interviewed by Business Censor also name Kyiv and Odessa as cities where the electricity supply situation may be the most difficult due to possible massive Russian shelling .

At the same time, problems with electricity are also possible in frontline settlements . Due to constant shelling, emergency power outages will not be avoided there . However, experts currently see no reason to predict large-scale and irreparable problems with electricity supply in other regions of Ukraine.
