American rapper and businessman Kanye West, also known as Ye, has publicly apologized for his anti-Semitic remarks.
An open letter of apology titled “To Those I’ve Hurt” appeared in the ad column of The Wall Street Journal on Monday, January 26, writes Vice .
The 48-year-old rapper said his erratic behavior and anti-Semitism were caused by bipolar disorder.
The rapper began the letter by mentioning a 2002 car accident that left him with a “broken jaw and a right frontal lobe injury.” West noted that the internal neurological damage “went unnoticed” until 2023.
“This medical error caused serious harm to my mental health and led to my diagnosis of bipolar 1 disorder,” he wrote.
The musician spoke in detail about his experience living with bipolar disorder and how the mental illness led him to a manic state that he could not control.
According to West, the disorder made him feel like he didn’t need help, believing he was “powerful” and “invincible.”
“I lost touch with reality. The longer I ignored the problem, the worse it got,” West writes.
West explained that in his “fragmented state,” he gravitated toward “the most destructive symbol” he could find: the swastika. The rapper wrote that he had previously sold merchandise with the offensive symbol, citing “poor judgment and reckless behavior” and saying he “can’t remember” many of those moments due to bipolar disorder.
Kanye also recalled a four-month manic episode in 2025, during which he felt suicidal, and thanked his wife Bianca Censori for convincing him to seek help.
According to the rapper, he is now following “an effective regimen of medication, therapy, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle” and is experiencing “so much-needed clarity.”
