On May 24, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko held a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron . This is the first contact between the two leaders at this level in some time.

According to Minsk, the parties discussed regional issues, as well as Belarus’s relations with the European Union and France in particular.

Belarusian government sources emphasized that the conversation took place at the initiative of Paris. Other details of the talks or possible agreements have not yet been released.

Contacts between Belarus and Western countries intensified in the summer of 2025. At that time, the administration of US President Donald Trump began direct negotiations with Lukashenko, including on the release of political prisoners.

As a reminder, according to military sources, Russia is considering several scenarios for new offensive operations in the Chernihiv-Kiev area, which could begin no earlier than autumn 2026. To this end, the Kremlin plans to conduct a new wave of mobilization of 100,000 troops.

Meanwhile, Russia and Belarus concluded joint nuclear exercises on May 21, which included practicing munitions delivery, missile launches, and missile launch site overturns. The discussion focused on Russia’s attempts to escalate Belarus’s involvement in the war against Ukraine and potential threats in specific areas. The head of state also previously noted “specific activity” by Belarus along sections of the Ukrainian border.
