Self-proclaimed Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko called on President Vladimir Zelensky not to block negotiations with Russia and to seek compromises, including on territorial issues.
He stated this in Bishkek, the Belarusian state news agency BELTA reports.
Lukashenko traditionally repeated the Kremlin’s talking points, claiming that the war could have been avoided if Ukraine had “abided by the Minsk agreements” and the country had maintained its 1991 borders. He advised the Ukrainian authorities to “reach agreements” and not rule out negotiations, even if some issues, particularly regarding territory, had to be “postponed for later.”
The Belarusian dictator also stated that Ukraine must take the situation at the front into account if it wants to preserve its resources and access to the sea.
“The ball is in Ukraine’s court… Otherwise, it will completely lose the country,” he said.
Lukashenko called the previous US peace plan “workable” and “a good basis for negotiations,” claiming that Vladimir Putin allegedly supports its main provisions. He argued that Russia is “more capable of negotiating” than Ukraine, while the European Union “has a negative impact on the situation.”
Such statements by Lukashenko once again demonstrate his role as an ally of the Kremlin and a translator of Russia’s position in the international arena.
As a reminder, Belarus is rapidly becoming a strategic staging area for Russian military plans . According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the latest Russian medium-range ballistic missile, the Oreshnik, could be deployed in the country by the end of 2025.
As reported, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin stated that joint military exercises with Russia will include scenarios for the use of nuclear weapons, as well as the latest Oreshnik system . He stated that this is an important element of strategic deterrence amid growing tensions on the country’s western and northern borders.
