Lukashenko questioned Trump’s “massive deal”: what happened

After US President Donald Trump’s statement about preparing a “large-scale deal” to purchase Belarusian potassium, Alexander Lukashenko said that there are no free volumes in Belarus for large supplies to the West. All production for this year has already been contracted.

Lukashenko stated this during a meeting with the Chairman of the State Customs Committee of Belarus, Vladimir Orlovsky.

“Even if we wanted to supply potash to other, Western markets, we simply don’t have such volumes – everything is contracted out,” he said.

This concerns the volumes of potash fertilizers produced by Belarus for the current year.

The day before, Trump said that Washington was working on a “major deal” to purchase potash fertilizers from Belarus.

The price should be significantly lower than what American buyers are currently paying to Canada, Trump said, calling it good news for American farmers.

Canada remains the main supplier of potash to the U.S. According to Reuters, the United States receives the vast majority of its imported potash from there, so analysts doubt that supplies from Belarus will have a significant impact on the American market.

The statements came against the backdrop of a gradual restoration of contacts between Washington and Minsk.

Recall, last week Lukashenko met with Trump’s special envoy John Cole . The parties discussed relations between the United States and Belarus, the release of political prisoners, and the issue of American sanctions.
