Leaders of the G7 member countries have made progress on Ukraine and are preparing to impose stronger sanctions against Russia.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated this in Canada, Ukrinform reports.
“A common position is emerging – we should strengthen sanctions,” Macron said.
As the French leader noted, EU countries are preparing much stronger sanctions against Russia than those currently in force in the United States.
Macron added that Canada, Japan and Britain are “closely coordinating” their positions with the EU on this issue.
“In our opinion, this has changed the situation because it will allow us to bring Russia back to the negotiating table, as President Trump demands,” the French president noted.
As a reminder, on Tuesday, June 17, the United Kingdom announced the introduction of new sanctions against Russia. Restrictions were imposed on 10 individuals and 20 vessels.
As reported, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke at a special meeting of G7 leaders and called for increased pressure on Russia after the largest attack on Ukrainian cities since the beginning of the war. The head of state emphasized the need to expand sanctions , strengthen air defense systems, localize weapons production in Ukraine, and called on the US and allies to take decisive action to stop the aggressor and restore peace.
