The geomagnetic situation around Earth will remain generally stable throughout February. However, disturbances will not be completely avoided – space weather forecasters are warning of at least one period of magnetic storm.
This forecast is contained in a 27-day space weather review released by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The level of the Sun’s influence on our planet’s magnetic field is assessed by the Kp index, an international indicator of geomagnetic activity. The scale ranges from 0 to 9: zero corresponds to complete calm, while nine indicates extreme magnetic storms.
According to expert forecasts, the following dynamics of geomagnetic activity are expected in February:
February 1 — Kp 2 (calm situation);
February 2 — Kp 2 (calm);
February 3 — Kp 2 (calm);
February 4 — Kp 4 (increased activity);
February 5 — Kp 4 (increased activity);
February 6 — Kp 3 (restless background);
February 7 — Kp 3 (restlessness);
February 8 — Kp 3 (restlessness);
February 9 — Kp 3 (restlessness);
February 10 — Kp 3 (restlessness);
February 11 — Kp 3 (restlessness);
February 12 — Kp 2 (stable state);
February 13 — Kp 5 (weak-level magnetic storm);
February 14 — Kp 4 (active phase);
February 15 — Kp 4 (activity);
February 16 — Kp 4 (activity);
February 17 — Kp 4 (activity);
February 18 — Kp 4 (activity);
February 19 — Kp 4 (activity);
February 20 — Kp 4 (activity);
February 21 — Kp 4 (activity).
The most noticeable geomagnetic disturbance is predicted in the middle of the month – February 13, when the development of a weak magnetic storm is possible.
