Malta agrees to support the 18th package of EU sanctions against Russia

Malta has agreed to lift its veto on the European Union’s 18th sanctions package against Russia.

This was reported by the country’s permanent representation to the EU, Suspilne reports.

According to Maltese diplomats, Brussels has provided the necessary guarantees that the new restrictions, in particular the mechanism for controlling the prices of Russian oil, will not lead to an increase in illegal shipping and will be in line with the original objectives of the package.

It is expected that this morning, at 9:00 a.m. Kyiv time, ambassadors of EU member states will hold an extraordinary meeting to review the 18th package of sanctions. This is about the final approval of the document after the withdrawal of objections not only from Malta, but also from Slovakia.

In addition, at the insistence of Germany and Sweden, the discussion of the package has been included in the agenda of the EU Council on General Affairs in the “Miscellaneous” section – this will allow the formal completion of the adoption procedure.

Let us remind you that the new package of sanctions provides, in particular:

introduction of a “floating” price ceiling for Russian oil;

restrictions on vessels involved in sanctions evasion schemes;

additional bans on the Russian financial and energy sectors.

After formal approval by the EU Council, the restrictions will enter into force.

As a reminder, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that his country would unblock the adoption of the 18th package of EU sanctions against Russia.

As reported, two members of the union: Slovakia and Malta, opposed the approval of the 18th package of EU sanctions against Russia.
