Mass murder in Rivne region: police detain 72-year-old attacker

A 72-year-old man killed five people in the Rivne region. The tragedy occurred in a place where internally displaced persons lived.

This was reported by the communications department of the Rivne region police.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, February 10, at around 4:15 a.m. A social worker contacted the police, reporting that her students from the village of Sudobichi, who live in a defunct school, were hearing screams in the hallway.

“The police established that at around 04:10 at the shared residence of internally displaced persons, a conflict arose between a 72-year-old native of the Donetsk region and other residents over domestic issues, which escalated into a fight. During the fight, the man began to strike five people with a hammer and an axe,” the post says.

Five people died from their injuries: men aged 60 and 68, two women aged 81 and 78 from Donetsk region, and a 56-year-old native of Kirovohrad region.

“The first to arrive at the scene were patrol police officers who immediately discovered the attacker,” the report says.

The 72-year-old attacker was detained by investigators under the procedural guidance of the prosecutor’s office. Investigation and operational groups from the Dubno District Police Department, the Main Directorate of the National Police in the region, and the forensic laboratory are working at the scene.

A pre-trial investigation has been initiated into the incident under Part 1, Part 2, Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (intentional murder of two or more persons). The issue of reporting suspicion to the person involved and imposing a preventive measure on him is currently being resolved.
