Massive power outages and transport collapse: an ice storm is approaching in the US

The United States is bracing for a potentially catastrophic ice storm that could cause widespread power outages and major transportation disruptions, putting an estimated 100 million people at risk.

This is reported by the Independent.

According to forecasts, from Friday to the end of the week, bad weather will cover areas from New Mexico to the Carolinas. Forecasters expect heavy snowfall in the northern states, and freezing rain and sleet in the southern states.

Winter storm warnings have already been issued for several states, including Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee, where ice could reach several inches thick.

According to weather services, the amount of precipitation in the storm zone could exceed 80 mm. This can form a layer of ice up to 8 cm thick – such a load can break power lines and break trees.

Cities and states are preparing equipment and resources, including snowplows and salt, as forecasters warn that the storm could cause traffic chaos and widespread damage.
