Mazepa instead of Lenin: a new monument to the Ukrainian hetman will be erected in Kyiv

Kyiv plans to erect a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa on the site of the former monument to Vladimir Lenin. The Cabinet of Ministers has supported the proposal of the Ministry of Culture.

This was reported by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.

The monument is planned to be placed on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard – on the site of the dismantled Lenin monument.

The exact design of the monument will be determined during an open competition. The Ministry of Culture, the State Agency of Ukraine for Arts and Art Education, and the Kyiv City State Administration are to jointly organize the selection of the best draft design.

The Ministry of Culture will also act as the customer for the design and production of the monument.

Funding for the installation of the monument and the improvement of the area around it is provided from the Kyiv budget. At the same time, other sources may be used for the design and manufacture of the monument, unless they are prohibited by law.

How much the project will cost will become known after the competition and approval of the design and estimate documentation.

The idea of installing a monument to Ivan Mazepa in Kyiv was voiced by President Volodymyr Zelensky in June 2026. Its implementation is also provided for by the decree of the head of state dated August 21, 2026 No. 781 “On the issue of honoring the memory of the Hetman of Ukraine Ivan Mazepa.”

Earlier it was reported that the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the installation of a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa in the center of Kyiv. The monument is planned to be placed on Shevchenko Boulevard, where in 2013 during the Revolution of Dignity the monument to Vladimir Lenin was toppled.
