Merz in Kyiv declared the absurdity of Putin’s war and announced new agreements with Ukraine
German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit on October 4 and, together with President Volodymyr Zelensky, visited the site of the Russian attack on the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. During the visit, Merz declared the senselessness of war, called on Vladimir Putin to stop the attacks, and stressed his readiness for negotiations.

Merz arrived in Kyiv this morning with a delegation. At the beginning of his visit, he honored the memory of the fallen defenders of Ukraine.
The Chancellor and Zelensky visited the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which was recently attacked by a Russian drone. The strike killed 2 people, injured 7 others, and caused significant damage to the building.
“An attack on the Academy of Sciences in Kyiv, right in the city center, by the way, just a few hundred meters from the German embassy. And this morning, on a peaceful Sunday, air raid sirens in Kyiv. War crimes are committed here every day,” Merz said.
The Chancellor called on Putin to stop attacks on Ukraine and be ready for negotiations.
“We are ready for negotiations, we are ready to discuss ending this war. But these barbaric attacks on the civilian population of Ukraine must stop,” Merz said.
During the visit, he also stated that Ukraine is facing crucial weeks, and his arrival should demonstrate that Ukrainians can count on Germany.
“Germany’s security also depends on the outcome of this war. Therefore, we are also helping out of our own, direct interest. Germany remains a reliable partner at your side even in difficult times,” Merz wrote.
Zelensky said he appreciated the chancellor’s decision to stay put despite the airstrikes and Russian attacks.
“This is a necessary and brave signal from the Chancellor personally and all of Germany. Thank you, Friedrich,” the president wrote.
According to Zelensky, during the visit, Ukraine and Germany are preparing solutions to strengthen defense capabilities against Russian strikes. He also announced important agreements between the two countries.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga reported that Merz will hold talks with Zelensky on bilateral relations, the European and international agenda.
Recall that German Foreign Minister JohannWadeful stated that in the future Europe could restore good relations with Russia . At the same time, according to him, now European security must be built without the participation of the Russian Federation and taking into account its aggression against Ukraine.
It was previously reported that the US wants to bring together representatives of Ukraine and Russia at the same table in October to agree on a halt to attacks on energy facilities. The US side should also join the negotiations, and the meeting could be held in Abu Dhabi.
By the way, the Kremlin stated that they currently see no prerequisites for moving to negotiations on ending the war against Ukraine . At the same time, the Russian side claims that it remains open to dialogue and once again invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to come to Moscow.
