German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on October 24 again opposed changing the policy of isolating the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, despite calls within his political bloc to seek opportunities for cooperation with it.

Reuters reports this.

Merz confirmed that he does not support any changes to the so-called “firewall” policy—other parties’ refusal to cooperate with the AfD. He made this statement after representatives of his political party repeatedly called for a reconsideration of its approach to the far right.

“Those who believe they should vote for these people have no place in our Union. They have no place among us,” Merz declared during a meeting of the Christian Social Union (CSU).

In Germany, the Union refers to the common political bloc of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Merz, and its sister party, the CSU.
