German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the government plans to return a significant portion of Syrian refugees to their homeland in the coming years.

This is reported by Welt.

According to the Chancellor, this represents approximately 80% of the more than 900,000 Syrians currently in Germany.

Merz made the announcement during a joint press conference with Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Berlin. He noted that the parties had already agreed to create a joint working group that would include representatives from key ministries and the Chancellor’s Office.

Germany is also preparing a study tour of its representatives to Syria. According to Merz, the situation in the country has improved since the end of the war, so approaches to providing protection to Syrians will be reviewed.

The Chancellor stressed that those who no longer have the right to reside must leave Germany. He also drew attention to the need for the rapid return of Syrians who have committed crimes.

At the same time, Merz emphasized that Syrians who have integrated well and want to stay will be able to continue to live in Germany.

Those who return are expected to take part in the reconstruction of Syria. Berlin has already announced support – about 200 million euros for infrastructure, including water supply, as well as the development of economic ties.

The interim president of Syria said he guarantees the rights of citizens and looks forward to expanding cooperation with Germany, including investments and work for returnees.
