Milan airport officially renamed after Putin’s friend Silvio Berlusconi

Milan Malpensa International Airport in Italy was officially named after former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on September 25. The decision to rename was made in 2024 with the support of the center-right government.

The naming ceremony was attended by Senate President Ignazio La Russa, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini, and Lombardy Region President Attilio Fontana.
“The realization that the Milan-Malpensa Airport named after Silvio Berlusconi will welcome thousands of travelers from all over the world every day fills me with pride and emotion,” said Marina Berlusconi, the daughter of the former prime minister.
The decision to rename was made a year after Berlusconi’s death in 2023. The official adoption of the new name was postponed due to legal challenges from the Milan administration.
Berlusconi led three Italian governments between 1994 and 2011. The politician was known for his friendship with Vladimir Putin and ambiguous statements regarding Ukraine.
In particular, in October 2022, he stated that Ukraine could enter into negotiations with Russia if it stopped providing weapons and instead offered reconstruction assistance.
