Million-dollar fraud with wood: deputy commander of Chernihiv unit caught stealing
The State Bureau of Investigation has reported suspicions to the deputy commander of a military unit in the Chernihiv region. He is accused of causing losses to the state in the amount of almost 25 million hryvnias during the purchase of wood.
This was reported by the press service of the State Bureau of Investigation.
It is noted that the officer concluded a contract with a private Kyiv company, ignoring more favorable offers from state-owned enterprises. The documents stated that the wood had to be delivered to the combat zone over a distance of about 800 kilometers, which significantly increased the cost of transportation. In reality, the materials were brought from the Chernihiv region, as well as from Sumy and Kyiv, which are much closer.
Thus, by fictitiously overstating the distance and cost of delivery, the state budget suffered significant losses. According to preliminary data, the deputy commander may also have received a bribe for concluding a contract with this particular company.
The forensic economic examination confirmed that the total amount of losses exceeds 24.9 million hryvnias.
The suspect was informed of suspicion under Part 5 of Article 426-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – abuse of power or official authority by a military official under martial law. This article provides for a penalty of up to 12 years in prison.
A pre-trial investigation is currently underway, the full range of persons involved in the crime is being established, and measures are being taken to compensate for the damages caused to the state.
At the request of the State Bureau of Investigation, the court chose a preventive measure for the suspect in the form of detention with the possibility of posting bail in the amount of 10 million 295 thousand hryvnias.
