US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte have agreed on a framework agreement to strengthen security in the Arctic, with a focus on Greenland. The agreement includes the deployment of US missiles, an expanded NATO presence and an economic component related to mineral extraction.
This is reported by Bloomberg .
The agreements were reached after Trump and Rutte met at the World Economic Forum in Davos. According to a European official familiar with the talks, the framework of the agreement includes the deployment of US missiles in Greenland, the granting of mineral rights to limit Chinese interests, and a stronger role for NATO in the region.
The main goal of the agreement is to strengthen security in the Arctic and deter potential threats from Russia and China. The agreements also provide for an expansion of the Alliance’s military presence and the creation of a multinational NATO command in Greenland under the leadership of the United States.
“When it comes to protecting the Arctic with a priority for Greenland, we need to spend more energy, more time and more attention, because we know that the sea lanes are opening,” said NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
The issue of Greenland’s sovereignty was not discussed during the negotiations. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed that the transfer of the territory to the US was unacceptable and any arrangements must comply with international law.
“We have to find a way that respects international law and sovereignty,” said Mette Frederiksen.
Trump said the terms of the deal were still being negotiated, but he described the framework as giving the United States full security access. He also noted that this was not about changing sovereignty, but about ensuring security in the Arctic region.
As a reminder, US President Donald Trump has confirmed the strategic importance of Greenland for the security of the United States. According to him, the island plays a key role in countering the growing activity of Russia and China in the Arctic.
Meanwhile, the administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing a draft agreement on Greenland , which it plans to propose to the island’s authorities. Washington is discussing the possibility of concluding a Free Association Agreement with Greenland and the United States.
At the same time, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen appealed to Donald Trump to stop making statements about the possible seizure of Greenland . She emphasized that talk of annexing Greenland is baseless.
As reported, amid the US president’s statements regarding the seizure of Greenland, the Danish authorities are sending military equipment and defense forces to the island.
It should be noted that Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated that Copenhagen and Washington failed to reach an agreement on Greenland.
