A new procedure has officially come into force in Ukraine, allowing men and women over 60 to voluntarily sign a contract for military service. This right is already enshrined in the adopted law No. 4467-IX, which entered into force on . Ukrainians who have the strength and desire can now join the defense of the country on official terms.

The launch of the procedure was announced by Roman Kostenko, secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security. He noted that an algorithm for accepting older persons has already been sent to military units and the CCC.

“This means that the procedure has officially been launched and those interested can contact the relevant institutions to complete all necessary documents,” the deputy explained.

What are the terms of the contract after 60 years?

  • must pass a military medical examination;
  • obtain consent from the unit commander;
  • for officers, additional approval from the General Staff is required.

The contract for people 60+ is initially concluded with a trial period of up to 6 months. Then the main term is 1 year with the possibility of extension.

When can a contract be terminated?

The law provides for early termination in cases of:

  • the abolition of martial law;
  • failure to complete the probationary period;
  • recognition of incompetence.

To dispel doubts about the new rules, lawyer Maryna Bekalo clarified in a comment to TSN.ua how the procedure works. According to her, there are no special rules in the 60+ contract.

“The procedure for concluding a contract with persons 60+ is no different from the general procedure, except for obtaining consent from the commander of the military unit, and for officers, also approval from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the specialist explained.

Can they force me to sign a contract?

Rumors are circulating on social media that the CCC is stopping people aged 60+ and forcing them to sign documents. The lawyer denies this information.

“It is impossible to force them to sign a contract, since the service is voluntary and a probationary period is established for such persons… stopping people 60+ on the streets in order to force them to sign a contract makes no practical sense,” Bekalo noted.

It was previously reported which specific categories of citizens are entitled to a deferment or are generally exempt from mobilization in the fall .

As a reminder, it was previously reported that Ukraine is considering a new basis for deferral . It can be granted to those who have sheltered at least two displaced persons free of charge.
