Mobilization in Ukraine: What awaits men over 50?

Mobilization in Ukraine: What awaits men over 50?

The Verkhovna Rada supported the presidential bill extending martial law and mobilization until August 2. Will there be any changes to mobilization, particularly for men over 50?

The Ministry of Defense notes that conscripted men aged 25 to 60 who are deemed fit for military service, are not eligible for a deferment, and are not reserved for military service are subject to mobilization. Consequently, conscripts over 50 are also subject to mobilization on the same basis as those aged 59. Even those aged 59, if there is no deferment, are subject to mobilization.

However, there are a few factors to consider when considering age:

• assessment of a person’s health status based on the results of the VVK;
• having a profession required for the army;
• right to deferment and reservation.

Certain distinctions also apply to unit assignments. More often, mobilized personnel aged 50+ are sent not to combat units or units performing missions along the line of contact, but to rear-echelon units and structural subdivisions, where the greatest emphasis is placed on professional skills and organizational ability.

Each case is approached individually, paying attention to the patient’s health, level of training, professional skills, etc.

As a reminder, martial law was first declared in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion. The Verkhovna Rada has now extended martial law and mobilization for the nineteenth time.
