Moldova is negotiating with Ukraine to transfer joint border control to its territory due to the threat of Russian attacks near the border.
This is reported by NewsMaker, citing a statement by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Moldova, Daniela Misail-Nikitin.
According to her, due to Russian strikes on the border areas of Ukraine, Moldova has already withdrawn its border guards and customs officers from four checkpoints located on Ukrainian territory.
Now Chisinau is discussing with Kyiv the possibility of transferring Ukrainian border guards to the Moldovan side to conduct joint inspections.
The minister explained that such measures will help reduce risks for border guards and people crossing the border.
Currently, negotiations concern two checkpoints. Similar changes may be introduced at other sites in the future, depending on the security situation.
Deputy Minister of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine Serhiy Derkach reported that the parties are developing a plan to relocate individual checkpoints. According to him, several pilot projects are planned to be implemented within three months.
Poland had previously prepared to consider transferring border controls to its territory if Russian shelling in Ukraine posed a threat to border workers and citizens. At the same time, checks should be carried out jointly by Polish and Ukrainian services, since Ukrainian border guards cannot work independently in the Schengen area.
