Moldova’s parliament will hold an emergency session due to the energy crisis.

The Moldovan Parliament will hold an emergency session on September 22 to consider declaring a state of emergency in the energy and hydrological sectors.

This was announced by the speaker of the Moldovan parliament, Igor Gross, reports NewsMaker.

According to him, government representatives will arrive in parliament at around 2:30 p.m. to ask members of parliament to declare a state of emergency.

“The government will present all its arguments. It needs all the tools it needs to make decisions quickly and provide the population with energy, water, and fuel,” Grosu stated.

A meeting of the Moldovan government is scheduled for the morning of September 22.

The day before, President Maia Sandu stated that the authorities must be prepared to quickly respond to potential problems with fuel supplies, a further drop in the Dniester River’s water level, and rising energy prices.

The situation with water and energy resources

One of the main reasons for the possible declaration of a state of emergency is the challenging hydrological situation. According to the Moldovan Ministry of Environment, in the first 20 days of September, the average water inflow into the Novodnistrovsk Reservoir was approximately 23 m³/s, while the downstream discharge was approximately 60 m³/s.

Thus, during this period, approximately 63.4 million cubic meters of water more than entered the reservoir left. The water level continues to decline.

Moldova also faces risks in the energy sector due to its dependence on imported electricity, gas, and petroleum products. The government previously extended the state of heightened readiness in the energy and hydrological sectors for another 30 days to more quickly respond to potential supply disruptions.

If parliament supports the government’s initiative, the state of emergency should provide authorities with additional tools to quickly purchase fuel, provide the population with water and energy resources, and respond to a deteriorating situation.
