The European Union has allocated an additional 50 million euros to support Ukraine’s energy needs. The funds are to be used to stabilize the power system during the war.
This was reported by the European Commission.
The financing is provided jointly with the European Investment Bank. The recipient of the funds has been identified as Naftogaz. The EU explains that the assistance will support the heat and energy supply of households, critical facilities and enterprises throughout the country.
Naftogaz, for its part, announced that it will reinvest 50 million euros in renewable energy and decarbonization projects. These are medium- and long-term solutions that should reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Commenting on the decision, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Cos stressed that the situation in Ukraine remains critical.
“The news coming out of Ukraine every morning is horrific. What Russia is doing is state terror. This goes beyond war,” she said.
According to Kos, shelling and destruction have forced people to leave their homes, and some of the population is left without heat during the cold season. She stressed that the current aid package is just one of the additional steps taken by the EU.
“We are considering all possible options to help Ukrainians,” the European Commissioner added.
As previously reported, on January 27, Russian occupation forces struck a critical infrastructure facility of the Naftogaz group in the western region of Ukraine.
As a reminder, the European Union has allocated the first 10 million euros for the creation of a Special Tribunal for Russia’s crimes against Ukraine.
