Monuments of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra damaged by Russian attack

Damage to monuments of national importance was recorded in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra as a result of a Russian attack on the night of January 24.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to a briefing by the Director General of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve, Maksym Ostapenko.

According to him, during the massive shelling, the area leading to the Far Caves, one of the oldest and most sacred parts of the Lavra, was damaged.

“During the last explosion, probably a Shahed drone, part of the fittings were destroyed, cracks appeared in the structural elements of the gallery,” Ostapenko said.

He noted that the last time the Lavra was destroyed due to hostilities was during World War II.

As a result of the attack, building No. 66 – the entrance to the Dalnye Pechery complex – was damaged, as well as building No. 67 – the Annunciation Church, where partial damage to the facade was recorded.

A preliminary visual inspection revealed damage to door and window frames, cracking and peeling exterior plaster, and mechanical damage to door and window hardware.

On January 26, specialists will conduct an in-depth technical inspection of the structures. After completing the documentation, work will begin on eliminating the consequences and preserving the damaged objects.

Deputy Minister of Culture Ivan Verbytskyi reported that 1,640 cultural heritage sites have been destroyed in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion. He emphasized that the Russian war poses a threat not only to national but also to world cultural heritage, which is why Ukraine is appealing to the international community to strengthen the protection of these sites.

It was previously reported that the astronomical observatory building in Shevchenko Park in Odessa was damaged due to Russian attacks.

As a reminder, the International Nuclear Energy Agency stated that the Chernobyl NPP lost all external power supply as a result of a Russian night attack on Ukraine.
