Morning explosion in Kyiv: SUV explosion recognized as terrorist attack, soldier injured

Today, January 4, 2026, in the courtyard of a house on Heroiv Dnipra Street in Kyiv, a car exploded while the trunk was being opened. As a result of the incident, a serviceman received shrapnel wounds, while a woman nearby was not injured.

This was reported by the press service of the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.

“Investigators are investigating the circumstances of the explosion and the persons involved, and the necessary investigative actions are ongoing,” the prosecutor’s office reported.

A serviceman was injured in the explosion, suffering shrapnel wounds. A woman nearby was not injured, law enforcement officials said.

“Currently, we are taking all measures to establish the source of the explosion and its motives,” the SBU noted.

A pre-trial investigation has been opened into the explosion under Part 1 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides for liability for a terrorist act. The category of terrorist acts includes actions that pose a danger to the life or health of people.

The investigation is ongoing, with expert examinations and witness interviews ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the incident.

It was previously reported that a car exploded in the Obolonsky district of Kyiv . According to preliminary information, there are injured people.
