Russia and China are actively taking advantage of Donald Trump’s desire to make quick deals and are trying to weaken American alliances in Europe and Asia.
The Wall Street Journal reports that both countries are advancing their own strategic interests by influencing the position of the US president.
In Europe, the Kremlin is offering Trump a “peace plan” that suits Moscow’s interests: seizing Ukrainian territory and blocking Ukraine’s accession to NATO. In Asia, Chinese leader Xi Jinping is trying to persuade Trump to drop support for Taiwan in exchange for a broad trade deal.
The publication writes that Trump advised Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi not to escalate the situation around Taiwan because he wants to reach an agreement with Beijing. The Japanese side denies these words.
In parallel, a leaked conversation between White House special envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov shows that Trump’s team is ready for large-scale deals, particularly regarding Ukraine.
Analysts believe that Moscow and Beijing see this as a moment to exert pressure and advance long-standing goals. Due to such a policy, the US alliance system is weakening and America’s position in the world is becoming less stable.
It was previously reported that China has begun forming its own “shadow fleet” of gas tankers , which will allow the country to import Russian liquefied gas, which is under US sanctions.
