Moscow in smoke, port attacked in Sochi: Russia covered by a wave of drones

Explosions were heard in Moscow Oblast and Krasnodar Krai of Russia on the morning of September 3, amid drone attacks. In the Moscow region, damage to high-rise buildings and a fire at a company were reported, while in Sochi, a possible attack on a port was reported. The Russian Defense Ministry announced that 416 drones had been allegedly shot down.

The explosions and the consequences of the attack are reported by Russian and Ukrainian Telegram channels, in particular Astra and Exilenova+.

In Pavlovsky Posad, Moscow Region, a drone reportedly hit a multi-story building. In Kubinka, a multi-story building was also damaged. According to Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov, the impact caused a fire there. In Bogorodsky District, a drone fell on the territory of an enterprise, after which a fire broke out.

Russian authorities claim to have shot down 56 drones over the Moscow region overnight. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin also claimed to have shot down drones heading towards the capital.

According to Astra OSINT analysis, the damaged house in Kubinka is located approximately five kilometers from the Kubinka military airfield. At the same time, a version is circulating online that the house could have been damaged by Russian electronic warfare equipment that deflected the drone.

Separately, there are reports of an attack on the port in Sochi, Krasnodar Krai. Smoke appeared over the port area after the alleged strike. Monitoring channels are reporting the possible use of a naval drone. Russian air defense systems or patrol boats are among the likely targets, but this information has not yet been confirmed.

In the wake of the attack, Russian authorities also imposed temporary restrictions on airport operations. In particular, restrictions were in effect at the Sochi and Gelendzhik airports, while Moscow’s Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports suspended aircraft arrivals and departures for the second time in a row.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced the alleged destruction of 416 drones over Russian territory. The agency did not specify how many drones were able to reach their targets.

As a reminder, President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned international airlines and insurance companies about the growing risks for civilian aircraft in Russian airspace . According to him, due to the massive use of drones, Russian skies can no longer be considered safe.
