Yurchenko was sentenced under Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – acceptance of an offer, promise, or receipt of an unlawful benefit by an official.

The court also found him guilty of abuse of influence under Article 369-2 of the Criminal Code. For this charge, the deputy received an additional four years in prison, but was released from liability due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.

Furthermore, Yurchenko was disqualified from holding positions related to the performance of state or local government functions for a period of three years. The court also ordered the confiscation of his property.

The Yurchenko case began in 2020, when the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) exposed his assistant for accepting a large bribe. Investigators believed the deputy himself was involved in the corruption scheme.

According to law enforcement, Yurchenko demanded $13,000 for introducing proposals to the bill, and was subsequently to receive an additional $200,000, allegedly to bribe members of parliament and members of the relevant committee.

At first, then-Prosecutor General Irina Venediktova refused to sign Yurchenko’s notice of suspicion, citing “insufficient grounds.” The notice was eventually signed.

After the investigation began, Yurchenko wrote a statement resigning from the presidential faction “Servant of the People.”

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also commented on the case, stating that officials must be punished for bribery and corruption.
