Musk announced plans to build cities on the Moon and Mars: when could this happen?
American entrepreneur Elon Musk has said that SpaceX plans to create a self-sustaining city on the Moon in less than 10 years. At the same time, the company does not abandon plans to explore Mars, but the main emphasis is currently on the lunar direction.
He wrote about this in X.
Musk said that SpaceX is shifting priorities in its space program and is focusing on implementing a city project on Earth’s satellite. According to him, the implementation of such a project could happen faster than creating infrastructure on Mars.
“We will also work on a city on Mars and plan to start this process in 5-7 years. But the main priority is ensuring the future of civilization, and the Moon allows us to do this faster,” Elon Musk wrote.
The entrepreneur explained that flights to Mars are only possible during periods of planetary convergence, which occur every 26 months. According to him, the duration of such a flight is about 6 months, while rockets to the Moon can be launched every 10 days with a flight duration of about 2 days.
Musk also stated that SpaceX intends to create a city on Mars in the future, but he estimates that this project could take more than 20 years to implement.
At the same time, journalists report that the entrepreneur’s statement coincides with information published in The Wall Street Journal, which noted that the company informed investors about its intention to focus initially on lunar missions. In particular, SpaceX is considering the possibility of carrying out an unmanned landing on the Moon in March 2027.
Elon Musk previously announced plans to send an unmanned mission to Mars by the end of 2026, but these terms may be revised. Journalists also note that increased competition from China, which is actively preparing for lunar missions, is affecting the US’s desire to maintain leadership in the space sphere.
