Naftogaz found significant gas reserves in the Black Sea – media

The National Joint-Stock Company “ Naftogaz of Ukraine” is negotiating with the Romanian company “ OMV Petrom” regarding the development of a new gas field in the Black Sea.

This is reported by Reuters , citing sources .

According to the agency, Naftogaz discovered significant gas reserves on the Black Sea shelf even before the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 .

Negotiations are currently at an early stage. Sources indicate that full development of the field can only begin after the war ends .

The agency’s interlocutors did not name the volume of reserves, but one of the sources noted that this field could become one of the most promising in the Black Sea region. Romania and Turkey are already developing gas in this area .

Reuters journalists note that the discovery of a new field could strengthen Europe’s energy security amid shrinking energy ties with Russia .

OMV Petrom, which is majority owned by the Austrian company OMV, is also exploring the Khan Asparukh field in the Black Sea off the coast of Bulgaria.

In Romania, the company is developing the Neptun Deep field together with state-owned Romgaz . Production is expected to begin there in 2027 , doubling the country’s gas production and making Romania an exporter .

It was previously reported that the largest oil and gas field in the country’s history was discovered in the Baltic Sea, near the Polish city of Świnoujście.
