Discord has reported a breach of some users’ personal data, following a breach by one of its third-party partners that provided content moderation and technical support services.

This was reported by the press service of Discord .

According to the company, hackers gained access to the support queue and stole personal information from users who contacted the “Trust & Safety” or “Support” teams.

As a result, the attackers got their hands on names, email addresses, the last four digits of bank cards, as well as a small number of images of ID cards that users provided to verify their age.

Discord stressed that users’ full credit card numbers and passwords were not compromised. The company also said that hackers attempted to blackmail it by demanding a ransom for the stolen information.

After discovering the incident, Discord revoked access to its systems from the compromised partner, reported the incident to regulators, and launched an internal security review. Affected users are being sent emails notifying them of the breach, and those whose documents may have been compromised are being sent separate notifications.

Possible consequences for users:

  • Phishing and social engineering: Attackers can use a combination of names, email addresses, and the last digits of bank cards to create convincing phishing emails that mimic messages from Discord or banks.
  • Financial fraud: Partial card details can be used to gain the victim’s trust in telephone or email fraud schemes.
  • Identity theft. Stolen images of documents can be used to open bank accounts, apply for loans, or register accounts for illegal activities.

The company assured that it is taking all necessary measures to enhance security and prevent similar incidents in the future.

We will remind you that poor cybersecurity measures in Ukrainian vehicle inspections have exposed hundreds of thousands of citizens’ personal documents over the past four years.
