The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is preparing a conservation project for the Presidium building, which was damaged as a result of the Russian attack on September 28. The work is planned to be completed before the onset of cold weather.

This was stated by the First Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences Vyacheslav Bogdanov on the air of the program “Culture on Time” on the TV channel “Social Culture”.

According to him, about 900 sq m of the building’s 2,350 sq m area was damaged due to the drone strike and the fire. Thus, almost 40% of the premises were damaged. At the same time, Bogdanov called the death of two of its employees the greatest loss for the academy.

The building is now completely unusable. Even the rooms that were not directly affected by the impact and fire suffered water damage during the firefighting.

“The part of the building that was not damaged by the impact and fire is also, unfortunately, currently unusable, because the roof was on fire, and the water that got in during the firefighting damaged these rooms,” Bogdanov explained.

He added that the building is old, and its wooden floors, shingles, and plaster continue to crumble, making it unsafe to stay there.

Elimination of the consequences of the impact

Currently, specialists from the Kyiv Emergency Rescue Service are completing the dismantling of the most dangerous structures. Academy employees are cleaning the premises in parallel. After removing construction debris and wet damaged materials, they will begin the conservation of the building.

Despite the damage, on September 30, the Presidium of the NAS held a regular meeting.

According to Bogdanov, the Academy has received words of support from a number of international scientific organizations. He hopes that this solidarity will help attract equipment for Ukrainian scientists and strengthen Russia’s international isolation in the scientific sphere.

Bogdanov also called on international scientific journals and organizations to reconsider cooperation with Russian scientists. According to him, after the start of the full-scale war, some publications began publishing their works again, and some international structures have still not excluded Russia from their membership.

It was previously reported that two academicians were killed in a Russian strike on the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv. Former NSDC Secretary Volodymyr Horbulin was also injured, and contact with several people is still missing.

In addition, on the morning of September 28, a Russian drone hit the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the center of Kyiv. After the attack, a fire broke out there, and people were evacuated through the windows. According to the district authorities, there were deaths and injuries as a result of the strike.
