US President Donald Trump and European leaders discussed security guarantees for Ukraine in the format of NATO’s Article 5.
This was reported by CNN.
As noted, if peace is achieved, Ukraine’s partners can offer security guarantees with the support of Europe and the United States. At the same time, NATO will not be involved in this.
However, the exact details of the proposal and the mechanism for implementing the guarantees remain unknown at this time.
An informed source for European Truth confirmed that officials discussed a similar version of security guarantees, the publication reports . He added that in the conversation it sounded like “non-NATO article 5 security guarantees.”
“This idea was proposed by the American side during the negotiations as one of the security guarantees for Ukraine, supposedly agreed upon in Alaska with Putin,” the publication’s source said.
It is worth noting that NATO’s fifth article states that an armed attack on one of the alliance countries will be considered an attack on the entire alliance. In such a case, each member country must provide assistance to the state that has been attacked.
As is known, following the talks, Trump and Putin held a joint press conference. “Pryamy” collected all the key statements of the US and Russian leaders . After the talks, the US President stated, in particular, that the summit was constructive and gave reason for optimism. He announced consultations with NATO and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but stressed that there are no final agreements yet .
By the way, EU leaders issued a joint statement after Trump’s meeting with Putin , which took place on August 15 in Alaska. They welcomed the White House’s initiatives for a peaceful resolution of the war.
