NATO is preparing a new support package for Ukraine: Italy agreed to a funding clause

The Italian government has announced that it will not prevent the inclusion in the final declaration of the NATO summit in Ankara of a provision on the obligation to provide financial assistance to Ukraine in 2027.

This was reported by the ANSA agency, citing sources in Italian government circles.

Previously, the German publication Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported that Italy would allegedly oppose providing financial assistance to Kyiv for weapons supplies not only in 2026, but also in 2027.

It was also claimed that the relevant point of the final declaration of the NATO summit in Ankara is at the stage of agreement.

At the same time, Italy never refused to support Ukraine and did not prevent the allocation of 70 billion euros. However, the country’s government considered the advisability of including this amount in the final declaration.

According to ANSA, objections on this issue were lifted a few days ago.

In particular, this issue was discussed during the E5 format meeting, which took place on Wednesday, June 27, in Berlin. At that time, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the intention to send a “strong signal of support for Ukraine” from Ankara in the form of “significant funding.”

It was previously reported that the Italian Government does not yet support the decision to allocate 70 billion euros in military aid from NATO to Ukraine in 2027. Because of this, the Alliance countries will continue negotiations before the summit to try to reach a compromise.

NATO countries are also preparing to announce new decisions on support for Ukraine . At the Alliance summit, which will be held on July 7-8 in Ankara, the allies may agree on new defense contracts, increased weapons production, and continued military assistance to Kyiv.
