NATO can shoot down Russian planes if they pose a threat to alliance countries. If there is no threat, the planes will simply be intercepted and removed from NATO airspace.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated this in an interview with Fox News.

In the past six weeks, three Russian planes have flown over Estonian territory and drones have violated the airspace of Poland, both NATO members. Rutte said the alliance responded promptly and in accordance with training.

He also expressed confidence that former US President Donald Trump is truly committed to ending the war in Ukraine. Rutte called Trump a “real peacemaker” who is very interested in ending the conflict.

In addition, the NATO Secretary General called for a freeze on the front line and the organization of negotiations between the presidents of Ukraine and Russia, Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.

“First we need to focus on what has been achieved, and then we can move on to discussing other issues,” Mark Rutte emphasized.

As a reminder, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that Warsaw supports the initiative to help Ukraine shoot down Russian missiles and drones, but any decision on this should be made at the NATO level.

As reported, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that he would not give an order to immediately shoot down unknown objects that could violate the country’s airspace.

It should be noted that EU diplomats have given the Kremlin a clear warning. NATO is ready to respond to new violations of the Alliance’s airspace – up to and including shooting down Russian aircraft.
